Today is one of those “by heck, do I hate JavaScript” days…

I’ve spent the evening tidying* my hobby area, to mentally “reset”. Nearly there… I’ve got legroom and elbow space again!

*really just throwing out some boxes and shuffling things into a different place.

People who follow me on social media – do you have a website/blog of your own? If not, why not? I’m genuinely curious, as it’s been so long since I *didn’t* have one, that I can’t imagine why more people don’t. (If you do have one, feel free to plug it in the replies!)

I can’t quite put my finger on what, but there’s something about the latest incarnation of White Dwarf that just isn’t clicking for me ?

One thing I’m yet to get used to in KDE, is that window resizing isn’t just a case of left-click-and-dragging the edge of a window. Instead, you have to hold down Alt first, and then right-click-and-drag.

I’ve watched a few clips and "behind the scenes" from last night’s Game of Thrones episode (I don’t actively watch the show anymore, but I like to "keep up" with it), and I don’t know how anyone was able to make sense of what was happening in most of the battle. Everything was so dimly lit and jumping about that I could hardly make out anything.

I really wish there was a way to mute/block keywords on YouTube… it would help stop them throwing spoilers in my feed whenever something comes out I want to watch.

Ahead of their event, and given how media platforms and licensing work nowadays, I’m wondering what the odds are that anything Apple announce today will be relevant to anyone outside of North America within the next 12 months…? 30%?

Went to see #CaptainMarvel, for one of my few cinema visits this year. I really enjoyed it – “higher, further, faster, more” indeed ?

It always excites me when I see small sparks of life from long dormant blogs showing up in my feed reader. Often they’re fleeting, but every now and then the author rediscovers the joy of posting on their own space and it becomes a rebirth.

I’m not sure how I feel about the new Google Stadia service yet. On the one hand, not having to worry about having the latest and greatest hardware is great; on the other, streaming games at full quality and responsiveness feels like it’s still a pipedream for most people. I’ve tried streaming from inside my house and it failed – how well is it going to work over the internet?

Then there are other factors like cost, ownership, giving yet more data about ourselves to Google…

💬 Replied to: a post

“So, as a result of the work Chris has been doing in Wordpress, making it easier to post to Indieweb.xyz, I’ve started “rolling up” all the posts by each user on the home page. I’m just trying this to see how it feels. I’m going to try quite a lot of things over the next few months. Let me know what works for you.”

I really liked this change – it alleviates some of the anxiety that came with posting a bunch of links and appearing to “flood” the front page. Now I’m only listed once, so don’t have to worry that I’m pushing out other people. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next for XYZ!

Sometimes you have a hobby session that goes so horribly wrong that all you can do is try to take any small positives you can from it. In that spirit, tonight’s minor victory was that I managed to paint a space marine eye using a size 3 brush

Lordy help me, I’ve had a flash of inspiration to paint up some Ultramarines. This cannot end well…

Now I’ve found a groove on Twitter I’m comfortable with, I think it’s ok for me to slightly expand my following circles to include a couple of extra topics I’m interested in. First up is the #IndieWeb

I’m having a weird time with the WordPress Webmentions plugin right now, where it only seems to send a webmention when I update a post after the initial inclusion of the mention. So: add mention (a href link) to the post > update/publish > update a second time.

Until I figure out what’s going on there’s no way to be sure it’s the plugin that’s the having the issue, or something in my particular setup. Once I can figure that out I’ll know whether to open an issue on GitHub or not.

Something else to add to the ever-growing todo list ?

Thanks for letting me know it didn’t come through correctly, and especially thank you for taking a look at what might be wrong. That was very kind of you, and a big help!

Every time I think I have the structure right on the microformats, something comes along to show me I’m not there yet… and it’s nearly always something subtle.

I’ve made a few adjustments, based on your feedback, so if I’ve got things setup correctly this time (and X-Ray implies that I do), then this should come through as a reply, rather than a simple mention.

Thanks again, and good luck with Kopye, Lighthouse, and Fortress!

I’ve come to the conclusion that, even though I love the models and current lore progression, I have zero interest in playing 40K right now. On the other hand, I’ve been wishing I had an army ready so I could play Age of Sigmar. Funny how these things wax and wane

I’m experimenting with different iOS editing apps again, and Ulysses is first on the block. So far I like that:

  • it gets out of the way
  • uses markdown
  • exports to HTML
  • and can export direct to WordPress

The obvious downsides are that there’s no way for Ulysses to “hook in” to the Post Kinds data I use for anything beyond simple notes and articles. That, and the yearly subscription1, but I can’t hold either of these against the developers.

  1. I have no issues paying for good quality software, or even subscribing if necessary. I just prefer to buy a license outright, rather than subscribe. ↩

These new Stormcast Eternals head upgrades look great, particularly set 2. It’s like the FW designers looked in my brain and said “yes, go create that entirely helmetless Stormcast army you were thinking about…”

💬 Replied to: Misadventures with WP-CLI (or: Always Backup First)

“I’ve returned all of the wrongly-pended posts to “publish” status. I do still have an issue with Post-Kinds data being missing on most of these posts; I think this is due to some wierd interaction between WP-CLI and the plugin, but I can’t be sure. These posts (~60) I’m going to have to fix by hand — I consider it a reprimand for my earlier flippant approach!”

I think I might have have fixed all of the missing post kinds metadata, thanks to the Feedly cache of my RSS feed. Please let me know if you come across any posts which seem to be missing information or context.

💬 Replied to: Parsing Issue

“For the last week or so I have been having issues with parsing sites. Where I was getting some information in the past, I am not getting very little.”

Aaron DavisAaron Davis ( )

I’ve noticed this issue as well recently – even when parsing known “good” sites.

Coincidentally, I was also having issues with services like IndieWeb.xyz parsing my own site, even though every parser and validator I threw at my site picked up the microformats without issue – including my local install of Parse This. In the end I tracked the issue to the WordFence for WordPress security plugin tagging the incoming request as a hostile bot and rate-limiting/blocking it in response. Infuriatingly, this was working fine for the previous few months. I’ve turned off WordFence and my site seems to get picked up properly now.

Following on from my last bookmark, it seems to be really simple to reactivate the built-in Links Manager for WordPress. Just add the following to your theme’s functions.php:

/**
 * Re-enable the built-in Links manager
 */
add_filter( 'pre_option_link_manager_enabled', '__return_true' );
// Add Shortcode
add_shortcode( 'links', 'wp_list_bookmarks' );

I haven’t checked to see if there are any “gotcha’s” with this, but it seems to work as expected. Once done, add the shortcode [[links]] to a page, passing in any parameters as per wp_list_bookmarks().

I’ve already added this to K.

Update 18/Jan/2019: After some further testing, the shortcode doesn’t actually work very well, so I don’t recommend you use that. I’ve switched my Links page to use a page template which calls wp_list_bookmarks() directly instead. The Links Manager still works, though I had some early issues with assigning categories… deleting them and starting over seemed to fix whatever internal taxonomy relationship was broken. I’m going to leave the Links Manager activation filter in K, but I’ve removed the shortcode.
