Asides

I've found a new assignment at work, changing team, role, and even industry. It means that for the first time in nearly 20 years my job isn't going to be in direct service of the Oil and Gas industry. It's exciting, and a little scary. I can't talk about it too much just now. Maybe once I've found my feet.

I took a couple of AZ-900 practice exams this morning, and scored really high. Out of interest I tried some of the later certification tests, and didn't do nearly well enough, so lots more work to be done!

I'm also considering going through the CompTIA Linux+ exam. I've been unofficially managing Linux servers for years, so it would be good to get that experience certified and visible.

So that's my first Microsoft certification exam booked for Thursday 😬

I think I'm finally going to go for a couple of Microsoft certifications. Azure Fundamentals seems to be a prerequisite for some of the most relevant to work, so I guess it makes sense to start there. The online learning course on the Microsoft website is pretty good (seriously, learn.microsoft.com is great), and my employer has a related track in our internal training system, so it should just be a case of finding enough time 😅

I wish masonry paint dried as quick as miniatures paint does…😒😴

I can't believe how many dungeons you have to run to unlock Kul Tirans in World of Warcraft.

At least the first couple were soloable on Normal difficulty, but now I need to somehow get through Siege of Boralus 😒

(I've avoided group content since Cataclysm)

Given how much I've come to love Clone Wars (and have now finished it), is Star Wars: Rebels worth a watch?

I'm coming around to the idea that The Clone Wars is the best thing to come out of Star Wars since the original trilogy.

The current series of Clone Wars is, like, really good.

All microphones plugged into my work laptop seem to be suuuuuper quiet for some reason. I’ve adjusted every slider and setting I can find, but none will go more than, say, 20% up the volume indicator when I’m talking loudly, and colleagues have mentioned the lack of volume in meetings. This applies to the inbuilt mic array, a USB headset, a different headset plugged into the audio jack, and a USB condenser "podcasting" mic, so it doesn’t seem to be device specific…

My passport expired several years ago, and I only just got around to starting the renewal process. Initially I put it off due to the independence referendum, then the uncertainty around Brexit (with a bit of laziness and other, higher, priorities thrown in too). It feels odd to be renewing in the middle of a pandemic, but the perfect storm of necessity and availability meant it was time.

I have to admit, I was impressed by how easy the online renewal system was, compared to how bad my previous interactions with .GOV services were…

I was out in the garden first thing this morning, and discovered the kids had left all of their colouring books outside overnight, and they were covered in a thick layer of dew and ice 🤦‍♂️

Genuinely considering shelling out £££ (and a whole bunch of hours) to get Microsoft Certified on a few things, because it would genuinely help for work. Younger me would be so disappointed.

I’ve pushed out some updates to https://whtv.directory, which should fix the 2 bugs I’ve seen crop up so far. I’ve also changed the importer schedule, so it gives Twitch a chance to generate the thumbnails before importing the latest VoDs.

Today, in “Totally Privileged Problems” – the robot vacuum seems to be failing, after 2.5 years of service. One of of the side brushes is struggling to turn, which causes the unit to instantly stop and beep loudly until someone turns it off again.

I'm going to try opening the casing up, to see if there's something jamming the mechanism, but I should probably prepare myself to find a replacement.

If the last few days/weeks have done anything, they’ve got wishing more online stores had a "only show me what’s in stock" toggle. It would save so many frustrating click throughs…

My grandad, who is in his 80’s and has been in hospital for the last few months, tested positive for COVID-19 today. So far he's asymptomatic, and hopefully it stays that way.

Today I turned up to a daily video call wearing the same jumper as a colleague. Oh, the horror 🙃

Finally got around to watching some of The Mandalorian. Definitely enjoying it so far! I'm a few episodes behind the release schedule, so I could binge most of it, but I think I'm going to space it out, take time to enjoy the series as a whole.

Me: "Hi, Bank! I’d like to lower the credit limit on my credit card, please."

Bank: "What’s that? You’d like to close your account? OK, done. Please pay the balance."

Me: "What?! No! WTAF?!?"

Bank: "…you clearly asked me to close the account."

I’m finding my sleep routine has been completely upended by the "new normal." Going to bed late, mostly by accident, and waking up even earlier than I was when I had to commute. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but right now I am so. darn. tired.

The last couple of times we've gone out for our state-sanctioned household exercise, my partner and I have both noted we've seen far more police patrols than we normally would.

Instead of the usual "wear whatever" while WFH I’m going to try wearing normal work clothes (smart/business casual) instead, to see if it helps with the mental context switch of "work time" vs "home time".
