I've been after a new monitor since the start of lockdown, as my home monitor was a nine year old 1080p model which had a fine mist of silver paint on the lower half of the screen, thanks to some airbrushing mishaps. It was definitely showing its age, but had been “fine” in a time when I was only using it one day a week.

I finally managed to get one with a price-to-features ratio I was happy with, and was in stock. In the end I decided to go with higher resolution (4K) over physical screen size (my original plan was 1440p @ 27”), and I'm very happy I did; everything looks so sharp and vibrant! Not having to completely rearrange my desk setup was also a bonus… the new monitor fit right onto the existing arm, with only a slight height adjustment needed to account for smaller bezels.

It feels like I'm the last person to do so, but I finally watched Hamilton, now it's on Disney+. It was really good! I'm not normally one for musicals, but it hooked me and flew by, despite being nearly 3 hours long!

I finally started playing Breath of the Wild on the Switch today, and I was not prepared for the difficulty of it. Part of it seems to be not mastering the controls yet/layout of the Joy-Con in my hands, and the rest is this is just way harder than any previous Legend of Zelda game I've played before.

At one point Mrs. K asked my how it could possibly be enjoyable to get the Game Over screen over and over on the same low-level enemy, and I didn't have a good answer. I do really like the game, but I have to admit, I'm not having much fun yet.

Every year – right around WWDC – I get the urge to do more with HomeKit/smart home devices, but the question inevitably turns to “do I want to do this because I should, or because I can (or because it sounds cool)?” Then it always ends with me questioning whether the investment is worth the amount of convenience it would give me.

I'm trying to get back in the habit of using Twitter lists instead of straight-up following accounts. I'd got a bit lax, and Twitter had started feeling chaotic and unwieldy. So don't be offended if I've appeared to unfollow you – I'm still getting your tweets one way or another!

Giving Hey a try, to see what all the fuss is about now there's no invite necessary. I've started forwarding two of my legacy service accounts to it, as they should be a reasonable test. I can't forward my main Proton Mail account, because they don't implement forwarding, but that's fine for now.

It'll have to really blow me away to get me to subscribe and fully switch. Pretty much all of my personal email is transactional these days – receipts, newsletters, etc. I can't remember the last time I wrote an email to someone I actually know… messaging apps seem to have filled that slot instead.

I moved one of the hallway motion sensors into my WFH space today, as it also measures the temperature. Even though it was noticeably cooler in the room than yesterday, with every available window open it still hit 24°C. I’m starting to miss the office AirCon!

I've been fully Facebook free for 6 months now, but I have a slight dilemma. My kids insist on using WhatsApp, because that's what all their friends, and family on their mum's side use. As much as I'd love to, I'm not likely to be able to nudge them towards using something like Signal instead. The network effect is too strong. At the moment we message each other over iMessage, but I increasingly get the impression they begrudge not having all their messages in one place on their side.

So, do I persist with iMessage, or hold my nose and install WhatsApp?
